MHP releases Memorial day arrest totals, fatalities

The Mississippi Highway Patrol released the Memorial Holiday enforcement totals report Tuesday morning, confirming three fatal crashes in the state. 

A fatal collision was investigated Friday at 8:01 a.m at the intersection of MS 49/433 in Yazoo County. Demitrus Swinney, 23, of Bentonia, was traveling south on MS 433 and attempted to cross MS 49 when she pulled into the path of another vehicle. She died at the scene.

Sunday just after midnight, a second fatal collision was investigated near mile marker 97 on US 78 in Lee County. The collision involved a pedestrian.

Corbyn Maddox, 22, of Tupelo, was walking in the west bound lane of US 78 when he was struck by a vehicle. He died on the scene.

Sunday afternoon, the third fatal collision was investigated at the intersection of MS 4/County Road 548 in Tippah County.  Leroy Derrick, 93, of Ripley, was attempting to cross MS 4 on a Honda Rancher when he pulled into the path of a SUV. Derrick died on the scene.

Other arrests over the weekend included 132 DUI arrests, 14 drug arrests, two public drunk arrests, and one alcohol related collision across the state.

    With inclement weather expected Sunday, the University of Southern Mississippi will wrap up its Conference USA baseball series with Middle Tennessee State University with a Saturday doubleheader at Pete Taylor Park. The first game will start at 1:30 p.m., 30 minutes earlier than the originally-scheduled 2 p.m. start. The second game will begin about 45 minutes at the conclusion of the opener.

    The Mississippi Department of Corrections has locked down all prisons in its system for the weekend.  MDOC announced the weekend lockdown on Twitter on Friday, saying that there would be no visitation, commissary or outside recreation this weekend.
