CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) -

Many of us are celebrating this Memorial Day weekend with family, enjoying barbecues and other activities.

Well, some local veterans and current service personnel are reminding us not to forget the real meaning of the holiday and they ask us to take a few moments to reflect on those who've lost their lives while serving our nation.

"I would say just to remember," said Col. Brad Smith, commander of Camp Shelby. "The celebration is great and it's all part of it, but just remember the reason why we celebrate the holiday," he said.

"I would like them to remember to say a word in prayer for those who laid their lives down so it would be possible for them to celebrate this day," said Willie Johnson of Hattiesburg, a Navy veteran of World War Two.

"I'd just ask them to reflect, take a moment out of (the) weekend, enjoy the entire weekend, but take a moment to think about the sacrifices of the soldiers that gave them their freedoms," said Col. Paul Kreis, commanding officer of the 158th Infantry Brigade at Camp Shelby.

About 1.5 million men and women have died serving in our nation's wars.
