LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - As the school year comes to an end, the Laurel Police Department is reminding the public of the city's curfew ordinance.
The curfew hours apply to all minors, 18 and younger, and are from 10 p.m. - 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 12:01 a.m. - 6 a.m. on the weekends. Laurel Lieutenant Jerome Jackson says the ordinance exists to help prevent offenses committed by or to minors within the city.
"Generally in our jurisdiction, crime has a tendency to increase in the summer and generally crimes that do increase are those larcenies, vandalism, anything that are usually associated with people of this age," said Jackson. "We want them to enjoy the summer, but we just need to have everyone aware of the fact that there is such curfew in Laurel."
Minors, as well as their guardians, may be held responsible for violations of the curfew ordinance.
