MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Madison police are investigating a death in Madison as an apparent murder.

Family members tell WLBT the victim is 37-year-old Dr. Garrick Shelton, chair of Developmental Enhancement Studies, at Jackson State.

Shelton was found dead in a bedroom of the home on Harris Lane, off of Madison Avenue, near Rosa Scott High School.

A family member was checking on him because he had not shown up for work.

Police say because of the indication of foul play they began a homicide investigation.

Madison Chief Gene Waldrop says it's a bloody crime scene, and, he says, for now it's being called a suspicious death.

They contacted the MBI Crime Scene Unit for help.

Authorities have found the victim's car, a black 2013 Chevy Malibu, unoccupied in the parking lot of the Addison Place Apartments located at 3175 Robinson Road.

The vehicle has been seized and is being held for evidence processing.

The Madison Police Department would like to thank the media and public for their fast assistance in this matter.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Madison Police Department at 601-856-6111.
