Laurel Kiwanis Club award students college scholarships

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Several Jones County high school seniors were awarded scholarships during an appreciation luncheon put together by the Laurel Kiwanis Club.

"All our money raised from our charities have to be locally spent on children eighteen and younger," said Laurel Kiwanis Club President elect Bart Gavin. "So this is our way of giving back to the community and rewarding our key club members that have earned a scholarship."

Three students from Laurel Christian High School, Laurel High School, Northeast Jones High School, South Jones High School and West Jones High School were given scholarships worth $500 each.

The 15 students each received one of four different scholarships, the F. A. McCoy Scholarship, the J. S. Gatlin, Sr. Scholarship, the Kevin B. Stanislaus Key Club Service Award Scholarship and the Key Club Service Award Scholarship.

During the luncheon, a Laurel Kiwanis Club Model Key Club Award was given to West Jones High School key club advisor Randy Cooley, for the school's annual excellence in attending Kiwanis weekly meetings, their Pancake Day ticket sales and for their hours worked and community service hours worked.

Wednesday's event took place inside Life Church in Laurel.
