Supporters of Hattiesburg's Sacred Heart Catholic School began a major new construction project Saturday afternoon. Ground was broken for a new 20-acre high school sports park near Bonhomie Road.
Initially, it will have football, soccer, baseball and softball fields, along with a field house and concession area.
But, plans are already in the works for additional features.
"Long-term goals are some track and field events, putting a track around the football field," said Chris Bethea, president of the Sacred Heart Booster Club. "We're looking at some indoor batting facilities for the baseball team. Obviously, the field house is being built to minimum standards right now, so expanding that for home, visiting (teams), the whole works," he said.
"There are so many people that have put in so much work to get us where we are right now," said Lonny Schraeder, head football coach for Sacred Heart High School. "And the kids have been working in the weight room and doing their part, so hopefully, we'll be ready when football season gets here," he said.
Supporters hope to have the new football field ready for the 2014 football season. In the past few years, the football team has played its home games on historic San Antonio Field in downtown Hattiesburg.
