The Jones County Sheriffs Dept. honored fallen officers today in a somber ceremony at the Jones County courthouse.

The annual Peace Officer's Memorial Day Ceremony is held to pay tribute to officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

Special recognition was given to the family of Randy Chancellor, a longtime Jones County deputy who was killed by a drunk driver in 2001.

"Law enforcement officers are being shot and killed, they're being run over, it's just a very difficult job that these people do on a day to day basis and I'm honored to be able to serve with them," said Alex Hodge, Jones County sheriff.

"We appreciate that the supervisors, the Sheriff's Department take time out to honor Randy and not only Randy, but all the fallen officers throughout this year and years past," said Lynn Patrick, sister of Randy Chancellor.

Guest speaker for the ceremony was Mississippi Supreme Court Associate Justice Randy Pierce.

As a freshman quarterback playing behind one of the best athletes to come through Columbia Academy in recent years, Thomas Erastus “Ras” Pace got his first career start in what was arguably the Cougars’ biggest game of the 2016 season. “I thought I did a pretty good job handing the ball off,” said Pace of his starting debut in a second-round MAIS AAA playoff game in place of the inured Wiley Cleland.
