Lady Crusaders Advance to NAIA Softball World Series with 6-0 win over OBU

Hattiesburg , Miss.- No. 10 William Carey University finished off the 2014 NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round in style as they shutout No. 13 Oklahoma Baptist, 6-0 in the championship game of the William Carey Bracket at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.

The Lady Crusaders were simply overpowering all week as they outscored their opponents 30-0 while surrendering just nine hits in the opening round.

After a 2 ½ hour rain delay, game six was scoreless for the first three inning before WCU finally broke through in the top of the 4th inning as Hannah Cook-Kelley (JR/Phoenix, AZ) ripped a two out single to centerfield to score Caroline Walker (JR/Woodville, Miss.) to put WCU up 1-0.

With the weather closing in WCU left little to chance in the top of the 7th inning. Lindsey Webb (JR/Vancleave, MS) started the scoring for the Lady Crusaders with an RBI double then Walker added a RBI single to give WCU a 3-0 lead. Sarah Beckman (SR/Meridian, MS) then delivered a two run single and Cook-Kelley capped the five run inning with an RBI single as WCU opened a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 7th inning Brittany Lang (SO/Biloxi, MS) worked around a leadoff walk by producing  4-6-3 double play an then got Shalee Cordell to fly out to end the game.

Lang picked up where she left off in game one on Monday as she stymied the Lady Bison offense all afternoon. Lang scattered three hits and need just 73 pitches to finish off OBU.

Caroline Walker, Sarah Beckman, Hannah Cook-Kelley, and Janessa Dedeaux (SR/Poplarville, MS) each recorded two hits for WCU.

WCU returns to action on May 23-29 in the NAIA Softball World Series in Columbus, Georgia.
