HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Brooklyn Vietnam War veteran who lost his service medals in a flood 30 years ago has received new ones, thanks to the office of Congressman Steven Palazzo.

L.E. Bond, 76, received a Bronze Star, a Military Order of the Purple Heart and other medals from Palazzo during a ceremony Wednesday.

It was held in the parking lot of the Gander Mountain store, in front of a transport carrying the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall. That memorial is on its way to Jackson for the 12th annual Trail of Honor event.

"I'm so excited, thrilled, I don't know what to say, but I will say that I'm proud to have served," said Bond.

"It's my honor to do it," said Palazzo. "These people have served their country selflessly and this is just a small token of our appreciation," he said.

Bond served in the Army for 15 years and was wounded more than once in combat.

He retired as a Sergeant First Class.
