Biloxi Fire Department prepares for relief trip to Louisville

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Many people across the state of Mississippi have continued to reach out to those in need in Louisville after devastating storms ripped apart so many lives.

The Biloxi Fire Department is one of those groups doing their part to help. In a matter of days, Chief Joe Boney and a few men from his team will be taking a relief trip to Louisville.

Boney says his department is eager to reach out and lend a hand, especially considering all those who volunteered their time and efforts in Biloxi after Hurricane Katrina.

"This is a personal level for the guys," Boney said. "We feel like if we can help someone, and we've been in the position before to need the help. You know, we're a proud bunch and we're not willing to ask, but if it's our brothers coming to help it's usually a lot easier," said Boney.

Boney said after talking with Louisville officials and learning what exactly they need, he feels his team will be prepared for the work.

"We are going to go up and do some cleanup work. They have some people that are in need of cleanup for their properties, because they haven't had time to do it. So we're going to go up, and we're going to start with first responders and help them immediately first, then we're going to move in and help anyone we can," Boney said.

The work is estimated to take a week if things go as planned, but Boney says in an effort to help this community, he asks for the support from his own.

"We've made contact, like I said, with the fire chief up there, and he's graciously given us the facilities to sleep and stay," Boney said. "We've gotten everything covered except for feeding our guys while we're up there and so you know, that's the only thing that we're lacking in."

If you would like to make any monetary donations to the Biloxi Fire Department before they leave on May 19, you're asked to call 228-435-6200 or visit the Biloxi Fire Museum at 1046 Howard Avenue.
