HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Mother's Day is considered one of the country's most revered national observances. When you remove cards, flowers and gifts from the equation, you have a story about granting one mother's wish that goes back 106 years.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the idea started in 1908. Anna Jarvis of West Virginia wanted to honor her deceased mother, who had hoped there would come a day to commemorate all mothers.

By 1911, every state observed Mother's Day, and in 1914, Congress made it a national event.

The Census Bureau said there are an estimated 85-million living mothers across the United States. In recent years, about 4-million babies are delivered annually. The average age of first-time mothers is just over 25.
