WIGGINS, MS (WDAM) - -

So. Dist. Transportation Commissioner Tom King and Stone County officials gathered Thursday to celebrate the importance of tourism in that county.

During a National Tourism Week event at the Dizzy Dean Welcome Center, King presented a check to Stone County and Wiggins officials representing the amount of money spent on tourism and tourism-related businesses in that county in 2013.

It totaled more than $9.5 million.

"For a small county, that is a huge impact," said Joel Miles, Mayor of Wiggins. "For the hotels, the restaurants, the fuel service stations, the convenience stores, it just brings a lot to Wiggins and Stone County," he said.

"It takes all of us working together to make it happen," said King. "And the product is economic development and economic development is all about jobs and that's what we need here, not only in Stone County, but all over South Mississippi," he said.

Some local musicians and artists also took part in the event, to celebrate Mississippi's creative economy.
