USPS carriers collect food as they deliver mail

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

This is a news release from the United State Postal Service

On Saturday May 10, residents across AMerica will be asked to join the U.S. postal Service and its delivery carriers to combat one of this nation's growing problems- hunger, by leaving food at their mailboxes.

This year the 22nd anniversary of America's largest single-day food drive will include PUerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands.

Last year 74 million pounds of food were collected by Postal carriers nationally, an estimated 30 million people.

Residents are encouraged to leave non-perishable foods in their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 10.

    The Mississippi Military Department, the Nature Conservancy and several state and federal agencies have teamed up to boost the numbers of endangered gopher tortoises at Camp Shelby and the DeSoto National Forest.
