New secrets revealed in the Ariel Castro case

Tuesday marks one year since three women and a child escaped the home of Ariel Castro in Cleveland where they'd been held hostage for years.

And Cuyahoga County prosecutors have released nearly 1,000 pages of documents -- some never made public until now.

Records show some of Castro's first words to police at the city jail. He called his hostages "his secret." But he also called himself "a victim", a victim of abuse as a child.

19 Action News broke the story last May 6.

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight all had been missing for so many years.

They'd been tortured and sexually assaulted in a home on Seymour Avenue. Amanda even had a child while in captivity.

Records show investigators did DNA testing on almost everything -- even inside a vehicle. They checked if there had been other victims.

And as defense lawyers tried to work out a plea, Castro had to take a lie detector test with questions about any other victims. Finally, a deal came to save Castro's life.

The release of records includes a letter Castro wrote back in '04 and left in his house -- a letter we revealed hours after investigators searched Castro's home. The letter was called confessions and details.

"I am very sorry. I am sick. These three women are the only ones", Castro wrote in the letter.

Many of the records concerning the victims are blacked out or sealed but we see references to drawings and journals. Amanda called one journal "love."

And as defense lawyers tried to convince prosecutors not to seek the death penalty, they included a statement from Gina to police. You may be surprised to learn, she said she'd asked her mom if they'd be mean to Castro in jail.

Sources have told us Amanda Berry also had expressed a desire for some mercy.

Of course, Castro killed himself in prison.

Prosecutors plan to release more soon. They will release more about a case still fascinating a year later, and it's fascinating for the survival of those women in the face of so much evilness.
