PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Hundreds of Petal Elementary students walked for one of their own today during the "Stepping Out for Toni" event at Petal Elementary School. Students took to the streets, making their way down Panther Stadium Drive Friday afternoon to show their support for fellow classmate, third grader, Toni Marino.
Marino who was diagnosed with leukemia in October, is now in remission. She took a moment out of her day to visit her classmates and see what the student body had done to honor her. Working together, the students raised over six hundred dollars.
"Today means a lot to me because I think people understand I had leukemia, and they were raising a lot of money for cancer so they can help cure people like me having cancer," said Toni Marino. "I just want everybody to know I miss and love them and pretty soon I'll be back next year and I just want to say a big thank you to everybody," said Marino.
Students and administrators are looking forward to Marino's return to the elementary school.
