Doc Sadler focused on recruiting for Golden Eagles basketball

Even before new Southern Miss men's basketball head coach Doc Sadler was introduced to the media and fans at a press conference in the Trent Lott Center, he was several hours into improving the program.

"It started at about 12:30 this morning making some recruiting calls," said Sadler.

"It started the minute that Bill [McGillis] shook my hand and asked me to be his head coach."

The USM athletic director said he was happy to get the coaching search process complete.

"It's only been 8 or 9 days, seems like it's been 3 weeks."

"I'm happy for our players because I feel like everyday they were without leadership is not a good day," McGillis said.

"We needed to have a head basketball coach in place this week and it's a good feeling. Slept a lot better last night than I had been."

Sadler was previously the head coach at Nebraska (2006-'12) and UTEP (2004-'06) earning 5 postseason trips including a NCAA tournament berth with the Miners in 2004-2005.

Sadler is 269-146 as a head coach.
