HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hundreds of Hattiesburg-area residents gathered at an annual event Thursday morning to ask God to help guide the city and nation. The Mayor's Prayer Breakfast at the Lake Terrace Convention Center brought together pastors from many churches to offer prayers for Hattiesburg and Forrest County, as well as the state and the country.

The event is held in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer.

"We pray for everything, we give it all to The Lord," said Johnny Dupree, mayor of Hattiesburg. "So, this is a tradition that we've had, and I think it's the best tradition in the world, you start off your morning with prayer," he said.

Keynote speaker was famed pastor and gospel singer Marvin Winans, founder of Detroit, Michigan's Perfecting Church.

"Today was wonderful, just to see all different types of people from Hattiesburg coming to pray," Winans said. "That's what unites us," he said.

During the event, scripture passages from the Old and New testaments were also read.
