West Jones High School art student named Best in Show

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A West Jones High School art student was named Best inShow in the 4th Annual Congressional District Art Show and his work will be ondisplay in Washington, D.C.

The winning mixed media piece by Jared Yelverton,entitled "Cold and Homeless" will hang in the U.S. Capitol tunnel fora year with other best in show winners from around the country.

"I am very deeply touched and I hope that they were rightabout it, because there is a lot of great artist here at West Jones and at theother competing schools, and I am really deeply honored by the award," saidJared Yelverton.

West Jones student Kayla Yates received Best in Showrunner-up and will have her work on display at Congressman Palazzo's districtoffice. Other top honors included:

 

  • Tanner Jeffers- 1st place
  • Aimee Phillips- 1st place
  • Nakiyah Jordan-2nd place
  • Nathan Crane-2nd place
  • Lauren Stevens- 2nd place
  • Laurel Jones-3rd place

 

There were also 47 art students from West Jones HighSchool that received additional Congressional certificates. Art teacher LoriHarrison was also honored with a certificate and a flag that was flown over theU.S. Capitol at the request of Congressman Palazzo for her dedicated service toWest Jones.

    Around 8 p.m., emergency crews responded to a reignited house fire on Hwy. 11 in Lamar County. Fire investigator, George Stephens, says the initial fire happened before 3 a.m. on July 21.  When crews arrived on scene, the home was fully engulfed in flames. No one was at home at the time of the fire. Stephens says the family was thankful to be away when the fire sparked.     Just after midnight on July 21, the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to a fatality on Hwy 53 in Pearl River County. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene.  According to authorities, a 2015 Chevrolet Sonic was traveling north of Highway 53 when it crossed the center line and crashed head on with a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado driving in the southbound lane.
