More allegations of 'inadequate care' at the Phoenix VA

QUEEN CREEK, AZ (CBS5) -

When Marine vet Howard Scott and his wife of 38 years Sharon saw our interview with Phoenix VA leaders they decided it was time to speak up.

"That's when we got mad. We felt like they [VA doctors} were just blowing us off," Sharon Scott said.

Howard Scott also has a story of long waits for an appointment at the Phoenix VA.

"They are waiting to see if you'll give up or die, in my opinion," Sharon said.

Last week, Howard visited a regional hospital in Florence, suffering from serious heart issues.

"He's got congestive heart failure and pneumonia, and his blood is too thick. And he needs to be on some medication," Sharon explained.

Medical staff at the Florence hospital told him he needed to see his primary care physician at the VA immediately.

"...And when they finally called me back they said we cannot see him til May 22 because you haven't given us any release papers from the hospital. They should've told us how to get the release papers to them," Sharon explained.

Sharon is worried her husband won't make it another month, especially without the medicine she says the VA won't prescribe.

"I'm afraid that he will get worse or die before the 22nd of May," Sharon worries.

The Scott's are in the midst of mounting questions of care at a hospital with a mission of serving those who have served us.

"It's made me mad, because we're one of millions out there that's being mistreated," she added.
