HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Forrest General Hospital and the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency have teamed up to honor organ, eye and tissue donors during April, which is National Donate Life Month.

They hosted a "Donate Life" flag ceremony at the hospital Thursday morning. The event not only paid tribute to people who were organ donors, but also encouraged others to donate.

Among those attending was Penny Lott, whose 17-year-old son, Alex, died of a spinal cord injury in 2012. he was an organ donor and has helped save the lives of five people across the country.

"I had no doubt what he wanted," said Lott. "And so, we went ahead with MORA, with starting organ donation, the matching process and his matches started happening immediately," she said.

"It's a difficult decision that families make, but it is also a very precious decision that they make, in order for someone else to live," said Ora Lee Shaheed, system chief of clinical operations for Forrest General Hospital.

If you'd like to become a donor, you can go to the Mississippi Donor Registry at www.donatelifems.org.
