HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Rep. Steven Palazzo is refusing to debate GOP challenger Gene Taylor, saying it would "make a mockery of the Republican primary process." Palazzo was in the Hub City Wednesday morning, speaking to the Rotary Club of Hattiesburg-Sunrise.

Taylor recently challenged Palazzo to a debate, saying among other things, Palazzo needed to explain his votes on defense cuts. But, Palazzo said he respects the primary process too much to debate Taylor, who served in Congress for 20 years as a Democrat.

"I'm not going to debate a life-long Democrat, somebody that voted for Nancy Pelosi, not once and twice, which allowed her liberal agenda to be crammed down the throats of hard-working Mississippi families," Palazzo said.

Palazzo defeated Taylor for the 4th Dist. seat in 2010.

In addition to Taylor, Palazzo will face challengers Ron Vincent, Tom Carter and Tavish Kelly in the June 3 primary.
