TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Mason Robbins had four hits and drove in four runs to lead Southern Miss to a 6-3 non-conference baseball victory over No. 8 Alabama here at Sewell-Thomas Stadium Tuesday night.

The Golden Eagles (25-17) won for the fourth time in a row as they swept the season series with the Crimson Tide in 2014.

“We earned a win (tonight) against a very good club who has been playing very well here of late,” said Southern Miss coach Scott Berry. “With this being the 100th meeting between the two teams for Southern Miss to win this makes you feel good.”

After the teams played scoreless baseball over the first three innings, the Golden Eagles got on the board in the top of the fourth. Bradley Roney led off the inning by being hit by a pitch. After a pair of groundouts that each moved Roney up a base, Robbins delivered his second single of the game, driving in the run with a hit through the right side.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead with three more runs in the sixth inning. Matt Durst led off the frame with a single. Dylan Burdeaux then doubled into the leftfield corner, before Robbins notched an RBI single to make the score 2-0. After an RBI groundout by Nick Dawson to plate Burdeaux, Roussel scored on a wild pitch.

The Crimson Tide (28-13) collected their first run in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Overstreet.

Robbins then extended the visitors’ lead again in the eighth with a two-run homer to right, his fourth of the year, before Alabama rallied for its final two runs in the bottom of the ninth with an run-scoring infield single by Mikey White and a RBI triple from Ben Moore.

“He has struggled for us this year but he hasn’t quit working on trying to get out of it,” said Berry. “He has never given in and been determined to get out of it and give everything that he can. Hopfeully this will give him a lot of confidence and get him in the direction.”

Cameron Giannini allowed just one run over 5 2/3 innings on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts to get the victory and improve to 3-2 on the season. UA reliever Geoffrey Bramblett (3-1) allowed three runs on three hits and a walk with a strikeout to suffer the loss.

Southern Miss returns to action this weekend at Pete Taylor Park when they entertain C-USA leader Rice in a three-game series. The two teams will play a 6 p.m., contest on Friday, a 2 p.m., tilt on Saturday and complete the series with a 2 p.m., game on Sunday. The Golden Eagles, which are in second place, trail the Owls by 1 ½ game in the standings.
