WALHALLA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate park might be getting a little safer this summer with a new life jacket loaner program.

Chau Ram Park in Oconee County will become the third in the area to offer the life jacket loaner program, the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department announced on Tuesday.

The program, which is already in place at South Cove and High Falls parks, was funded by a grant from the Keese Foundation and the kiosk was constructed and installed by county employees.

The program began when Craig Keese, a native of the Oakway community, lost his son and grandson in a drowning accident in Missouri in 2010, according to Parks Department Director Phil Shirley.

"Our message is very simple, anyone adult or children, around the water, or in a boat less than 21 feet should be wearing an approved life jacket. Several states are now involved in revising boating safety laws to stiffen compulsory training, increasing penalties for drinking while driving, and compulsory lifejacket wear," Keese said.
