BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Chase Davis collected a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to break a tie score and lift UAB to a 6-5 Conference USA baseball victory over Southern Miss here Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.

The Golden Eagles (20-16 overall, 9-5 in C-USA) had a six-game winning streak over the Blazers snapped in the contest as the deciding game of the series will be played, Sunday, at 1 p.m. Southern Miss won the opener, 3-2, on Friday.

Tim Lynch led the Golden Eagles with three hits to extend his hitting streak to eight games, while Breck Kline and Michael Sterling added two hits apiece.

The visitors jumped out to a 3-0 early advantage.

Matt Durst hit a sacrifice fly in the opening frame to give Southern Miss a 1-0 lead and then added to that total with a two-run double by Dylan Burdeaux in the third. Burdeaux delivered with the bases loaded hit to center and plated the first two runners. Bradley Roney, who reach by being hit by a pitch, rounded the bases just a couple steps behind the runner ahead of him, Durst, and he was tagged out at the plate.

The Blazers took their first lead of the game by erupting for four runs in the bottom of the frame. After a leadoff four-pitch walk to Ivan DeJesus, Matt Morse singled and Adam Smith reached on a base-hit bunt to load the bases.

Davis then put the Blazers (24-11, 10-4) on the board with a groundout to first, scoring DeJesus and was followed by a two-run single from Ryan Prinzing. Jeff Schalk gave UAB the lead with a sacrifice fly to end the inning. Griffin Gum then made the score 5-3 in the fifth on a run-scoring double.

Southern Miss, though, rallied to tie the score in the sixth. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases on three consecutive hits by Breck Kline, Michael Sterling and Lynch to open the frame. After Durst grounded into a double play to knock in Kline, Sterling scored on a wild pitch to tie the score.

The score remained that way until the eighth when the Blazers took the lead for good.

UAB reliever Thomas Lowery came in and threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings for the Blazers, retiring the last seven batters he faced and only allowed a walk in his outing with three strikeouts to get the victory and improve to 3-1.

Jake Winston, who came in for Golden Eagle starter Conor Fisk in the sixth, gave up a run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 3-2.
