COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - Columbia is expected to raise sewer rates by $4 over the next several months.
In order to keep up with Department of Environmental Quality guidelines, Columbia must upgrade its waste water treatment facility. The city will add new aerators and various other equipment to maintain its permit to discharge treated water into the Pearl River.
Mayor Robert Bourne said over the next 24 months the costs will exceed $500,000. In order to break even with sewage treatment costs, the city must raise sewer rates by around $4. The rate increase should go into effect this fall.
