Sandersville residents go to polls to elect new mayor

Posted: Updated:
SANDERSVILLE, MS (WDAM) -

Sandersville residents are voting Tuesday in a special election for mayor.

The election was made necessary when Mayor Jimmy Hill died in February while still in office. The three candidates are Alderman Bob White, who has been serving as acting mayor since Hill's death, Walter Jack and Hill's widow Darlene. White has lived in Sandersville most of his life and has served on the board for 31-years. Jack is a retired school teacher who has lived in town all his life, and Hill has lived in town 40-plus-years and says she ran  for mayor to continue her husbands work. Whoever is elected will serve out the former mayor's current term.

The polls will remain open until 7 p.m. this evening.
