CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) -

As one long-term mission ends, another may soon be beginning for many of the men and women who are serving at Camp Shelby. As of March 31, the post's ten-year mobilization mission officially came to a close.

During that time, Camp Shelby trained more than 200,000 military personnel for service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Now, attention turns to bringing troops and equipment home.

The post is scheduled to demobilize many returning soldiers and it may end up storing, classifying and re-distributing billions of dollars in equipment, as part of a strategic intermodal logistics hub.

"We are working with the Army and the National Guard Bureau to bring equipment back, or at least some of the equipment back from Afghanistan to Camp Shelby for classification and repair and to return to the inventory," said Col. William "Brad" Smith, commander of Camp Shelby. "We don't have a time period right now, but we continue to work that very aggressively," Smith said.

Smith also said the post will continue its annual training mission for National Guard and Reserve units and he says some 20,000 troops from across the southeast are scheduled to do their required training at Camp Shelby this year.
