The Southern Pines Animal Shelter has been selected, for the second time, to take part in a nationwide contest to increase adoptions of homeless pets. SPAS will participate in the ASPCA Rachel Ray $100K Challenge. It will take place June 1-Aug. 31. The shelter is one of 50 across the country competing and is the only one selected from Mississippi. It's goal for the contest period is to find good homes for 1,500 cats and dogs. The grand prize is $100,000.
"It's about growth for us, it's about growth into the community, it's about taking that next step to do better for the animals in our community," said Ginny Sims, shelter manager. "And we're just really honored and excited to be a part of it," she said.
SPAS competed in the same contest in 2010. It's theme for this year's event is Furrytales: A Summer of Happily Ever Afters.
