JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It was one year ago today that Jackson Police Detective Eric Smith was killed inside JPD Headquarters. To keep his memory alive, Chief Lindsey Horton has several pictures of the slain officer displayed in his office.

Smith was shot four times and killed while interrogating murder suspect Jeremy Powell. Powell wrestled Smith's gun away during questioning.

Detective Smith was an 18-year veteran with JPD. Chief Horton says Smith was a phenomenal husband and father and the epitome of one of Jackson's finest lawmen.

"He was born with the innate ability to sniff out the bad guys," said Horton. "I mean there are occasions when we would give him very limited evidence, information, and for whatever reason within days sometimes the same day not only has he come up with the suspect be he has emphatically confessed."

Chief Horton says Detective Smith's wife, who works as a Sergeant for JPD, is a pillar of strength. and doing well in spite of her husband's untimely death.
