Hattiesburg launches new Hands up for Hattiesburg initiative

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Hattiesburg City Councilwoman has launched a new initiative for citizens of the Hub City.

Mary Dryden has helped launch "Hands up for Hattiesburg" because many residents in the community still need help recovering and rebuilding from the February 10, 2013 tornado.

Dryden is seeking volunteers who can help citizens in need by teaching them valuable skills so that they not only can assist with their own house repairs, but also pay it forward by sharing their newly acquired skills with others in need.

"I also see this as a way of connecting people in Hattiesburg, people getting to know each other, neighbor helping neighbor. So that people are not isolated, and then we create pride in our community by improving the appearance of our homes, and we keep their value up, and we help people realize that Hattiesburg is a great place to live," said Dryden.

Hands Up for Hattiesburg is about neighbors helping and encouraging other people with special skills to pass them on to others. Dryden added the tornado created the crisis of a lot of damage in the city and left people in need of assistance and help.

If you are interested in volunteering in the Hands Up for Hattiesburg initiative, contact Dryden or visit the Let's Talk Hattiesburg website.
