CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) - Members of a unit from Keesler AFB have completed a three-day march from Biloxi to Hattiesburg which honored fallen comrades and recognized the dedication of the Air Force in supporting the U.S. Army.
More than two dozen members of the 602nd Training Group (Provisional) made the 84-mile ruck march which ended at Camp Shelby Friday morning.
The unit, activated in 2007, prepares airmen for service in joint force operations outside of normal Air Force missions. 10 of the airmen trained by the unit have been killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"We've lost ten since we've been in existence here, so this commemorates them and we want to make sure they're not forgotten," said Master Sgt. William Baros, a member of the 602 TRG (P).
"Probably the greatest part of the whole ruck was having the community come out and greet us at the roads," said Lt. Col. Ronald L. Betts, deputy commander of the 602 TRG (P). "Each of us have a story to tell from this ruck march, from families coming out in the middle of the streets, waving, kids coming out to give us hugs," he said.
Each unit member in the march carried an extra ten pounds in their pack for each one of their airmen killed in action.
