Southern Pines offering free spay or neuter for feral cats in April

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

During the month of April the Southern Pines Spay and Neuter Clinic is offering free spay or neuter surgery and rabies vaccinations for feral cats in the Pine Belt.

The campaign is called Community Catch and was made possible by a $12,000 grant from Pet Smart Charities. By taking this approach to a growing over population problem Southern Pines is looking to lessen the impact of the coming kitten season. The money from the grant is enough to cover the surgery from about 250-cats. To qualify residents must trap the cats themselves and bring them to the clinic. Once the surgery is completed the cats will be returned so they can be released back into their natural  environments.

"An important part is they need to catch the cats in a humane trap," said Valerie Rachal, SPAS Research and Development. "It needs to be a trap that won't injure the cats obviously made of wire."

Rachal says the traps can bought at most farm and garden stores and the clinic can loan traps to individuals.

The Clinic is located at 1304 Hardy Str. in Hattiesburg. To make an appointment for the surgery you can stop by or call 601-544-5678.
