JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The Southern Cross Animal Rescue is beginning a month long effort to control the overpopulation of feral cats in Jones County.
Thanks to a grant from Pet Smart Charities they have partnered with the Southern Pines Spay and Neuter Clinic in Hattiesburg to have the feral's get the surgery free of charge. Since the effort began more than 30 cats and kittens have been trapped and taken to the clinic. Once the surgery is completed they are released back into their natural environment.
"This will help keep the production down and keep the colonies healthy," said Heather Chandler Williams, SCAR founder. "It will allow the animals to live in their natural environment that they want to live in without causing undue stress on the residents."
By the end of April Southern Cross hopes to spay or neuter 200-cats.
