Fire damages Southern Metals in Jones County

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - An early morning fire damaged a portion of Southern Metals Company of Mississippi, Inc., located on Doncurt Road in Jones County.

At approximately 5:45 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, volunteer fire units from Glade Volunteer Fire Department and fire units from Laurel Fire Department responded to 144 Doncurt Road to the metal stampings and fabrication company.

The fire had apparently originated in the compressor room shed, severely damaging the shed's roof and the compressor and all electrical components located inside the structure.  When firefighters arrived on scene the fire had spread to the wall joining an adjacent building; however, within 20 minutes the firefighters had the blaze under control, preventing the fire from spreading, and causing catastrophic damage to the extremely large facility.

According to company officials, they estimate the early morning fire caused more than $100,000 in damages.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Also responding to the scene were Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna, and Jones County Sheriff's Department.
