Montgomery celebrates grand opening of new recycling facility

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

It's a first-of-its-kind facility, and it opened Monday in Montgomery.

The Advanced Mixed Materials Recovery Facility, know as IREP at Montgomery, is designed to sort recyclables from everyday garbage, eliminating the need for a curbside recycling program.

The facility, located on Louisville Street off the Northern Boulevard, is expected to create about 110 local jobs and keep up to 80 percent of waste from going into landfills.

There will be two to three weeks of testing after the grand opening, but company leaders say it will be fully operational by sometime in May.

For residents, recycling will be as easy as taking out the trash.

Every single piece of trash that is picked up in the green, city-issued trash cans and collected by the garbage trucks will be taken to this recycling facility to be sorted. The trash will be separated using screening, air and optical separation technologies.

The recyclable materials, like cardboard, mixed paper, metals, aluminum cans and plastic will be sold off to private companies. The rest of the trash will taken to the city's landfill.

Crews broke ground on the building this past summer.
