AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -

An Auburn woman was killed Sunday evening in a 3-vehicle crash at the intersection of Green Street and Samford Avenue.

When first responders arrived on the scene at 5:13 p.m., they found 85-year-old Mary Hunta Owens and 93-year-old Joseph Yeager inside a 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass that had been struck on the passenger side.

Owens, who was sitting on the passenger side, suffered multiple blunt force impact injuries and was killed instantly, according to Lee County Deputy Coroner Charlotte Patterson.

Yeager, who was driving, suffered serious injuries and was air-lifted to a hospital in Columbus, Ga.

Authorities say the driver of the 2003 Nissan Xterra that struck Yeager's vehicle, a 22-year-old female from Auburn, suffered minor injuries.

The 51-year-old driver of a third vehicle, a 2014 Subaru Outback, was not injured and was released from the scene.

A preliminary investigation shows that Yeager's vehicle was traveling south on Green Street and entered the intersection where it collided with the Nissan SUV that was traveling south on Samford Ave. The initial impact threw Yeager's vehicle into the Subaru, which was waiting to turn at the intersection.

The accident remains under investigation, but authorities do not believe alcohol was a factor. It is possible that the late afternoon sun could have been a vision factor in the crash.
