MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - Meridian Public School District has cut ties with an afterschool program at Freedom Rock Christian Fellowship Church because of the church's application to open a charter school in the city.

The school board took the action Wednesday.

Freedom Rock is among a dozen groups statewide that have filed applications for the first charter schools in Mississippi.

Meridian Superintendent Alvin Taylor tells The Meridian Star (http://bit.ly/1dval0R ) that if Freedom Rock is approved for a charter school, it will be in competition with the city schools for students.

Taylor says that could mean a loss of state funding and teachers for the Meridian system.

Taylor says if Freedom Rock drops its application, then Meridian would reconsider the afterschool program.

Elder LaBaron Hedgemon, pastor of Freedom Rock, declined comment.
