Tall ship replicas of Pinta, Nina visit Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Replicas of Christopher Columbus' Nina and Pinta ships are sailing into Savannah.

They'll be here at noon Thursday and will be docked at the City of Savannah Dock by Rousakis Plaza at 115 E. River St., until the morning of April 7.

"We started 21 years ago touring the United States," said Pinta Senior Capt. Morgan Sanger. "We have been to about 800 - 900 ports and the last time we visited Savannah was like 1993."

The Nina was built by hand and without the use of power tools and is considered to be the most historically accurate version of Columbus's ship, according to a news release. The Pinta was recently built in Brazil and is a larger version of the original.

The ships will open to the general public on Friday for self-guided tours. Admission charges are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for students ages 5-16. Children 4 and under are free. The ships will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. No reservations are necessary.

Teachers or organizations wishing to schedule a 30 minute guided tour with a crew member can call 787.672.2152 or visit our website www.thenina.com and click on the Take a Tour link to fill out online form. The minimum required amount of people for a group tour is 15. The group rate is $5 per person.
