Trial date set for Jones County man charged with capital murder

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A trial date has been set for a Jones County man charged with capital murder for killing his girlfriend's daughter.

A hearing was held Tuesday for Justin Blakeney, who is accused of murdering two-year-old Victoria Viner by pounding a telephone book against her head in 2010.
After granting a change of venue back in January, Judge Billy Joe Landrum set Blakeney's trial for July 7. The trial will begin with a jury selection from Greene County, where 12 jurors plus 4 to 6 alternatives will be chosen and brought back to the Jones County court room.

"I've struggled with this for this amount of time and as I've said on every occasion I will see it through to the better end and I'm thrilled that we finally got a exact date and we know where the jurors are coming from," said Jones County Assistant District Attorney J. Ronald Parrish.

This was the second motion filed by prosecutor J. Ronald Parrish since the judge declared a mistrial in January.
