Suspicious fire damages home in East Jones County

This is a news release from the Jones County Fire Council

A vacant home in East Jones County was badly damaged by fire Monday afternoon, March 24.

Shortly after 1 p.m., fire units from Powers, M&M, and Glade Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the report of a house on fire at 22 Springdale Road.  Upon arrival firefighters found the front door of the home ablaze with the flames beginning to spread onto the front wood porch.  According to the Incident Commander, Kyle Howell, Powers assistant fire chief, the Powers firefighters were able to quickly knock the flames out at the front door, and made entrance into the house.  The house was full of smoke, but most of the fire had burned itself out, with the exception of a few hotspots.

The owner of the home is unknown at this time, but according to witnesses on scene, the last occupants had recently moved out.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Jones County Sheriff's Department Fire Investigator Scott Gable.

Also responding to the scene was Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna.
