HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Covington County man escaped serious injury when the car he was driving crashed into a bridge guard rail Monday afternoon.

The accident happened at around 2:45 p.m. on Old Highway 49 in Seminary. Authorities say the man lost control of his vehicle, hit the guard rail and came to rest teetering off the side of the bridge. Transmission fluid and gas spilled from the vehicle into a small creek below the bridge. The Collins Fire Department was called in to assist in cleaning up the spill from the creek.

"The fire department was able to get an early stop on it by using a piece of sheet metal across the creek and we used an absorbent boom an pads to soak up additional material," said John Pope, Collins Fire Chief.

Two tow trucks with booms were brought in to help get the car off the side of the bridge.

The driver of the vehicle declined treatment at the scene
