HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss junior right-hander Christian Talley (Diamondhead, Miss.) garnered Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week honors for his performance last Friday night against league foe UTSA. The announcement came Monday from the league office in Irving, Texas.
Talley captured his first victory over the season in a 6-2 contest by throwing the Golden Eagles’ first complete game of the season, giving up just two runs on five hits with no walks and adding a season-best 12 strikeouts against the Roadrunners. Talley did not allow a hit after the fifth inning, retiring 14 of the last 15 batters he faced – the only one reaching on a USM fielding error.
His double-digit strikeout total was the third time this season the Golden Eagles have had a pitcher fan at least 10 in a contest. He punched out the first three UTSA hitters and six of the first eight batters he faced. Along with the 12 strikeouts, he had eight fly outs as the team collected just five assists in the contest.
In two C-USA starts, Talley has fanned 21 in 14 innings of work. This season, Talley is 1-1 with a 2.12 ERA in five starts overall.
Talley shared the pitcher honor with Rice junior right-hander Zech Lemond, while Old Dominion senior first baseman Josiah Burney collected C-USA Hitter of the Week honors.
It was the second C-USA pitching weekly award for the Golden Eagles this season as senior Conor Fisk was lauded by the conference earlier this month.
The Golden Eagles (12-12) return to action Tuesday when they travel to Pearl to face Ole Miss at Trustmark Park. Game time is 6:30 p.m., as the game starts a six-game road swing for the program.
