Forrest County auto fire causes early morning crash

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A car caught fire shortly before 9 a.m. on I-59 northbound near exit 73 Monroe Road.

A red Pontiac Grand Prix caught fire after the owner noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment. The owner quickly pulled over as the car was engulfed in flames.

First responders from the North Forrest Volunteer Fire Department arrived and the fire was extinguished. No one was injured in the incident.

A secondary accident happened near mile marker 71 after a car rear-ended a pickup truck hauling a trailer.

No injuries were reported, but the incident caused traffic to be backed up for over a mile.

    There were two Rite Aid stores in the Pine Belt at the start of 2018; one in Petal and one in Hattiesburg. Now, only the Petal location remains open, but it will soon close its doors for good, too.
