HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Members of the University of Southern Mississippi family spent the day lending a helping hand around the community.
More than 600 students scattered across the Pine Belt today for a day of community-wide services as a part of the Big Event. Students divided into groups and volunteered at the R3SM house, Hattiesburg High School, Longleaf Trace, Petal's Habitat for Humanity homes, Southern Pines Animal Shelter as well as multiple other locations.
"It's awesome to come out here and know that we are helping these people, and we're building their houses, and we're painting their houses, and we're doing a good job, and we know that they are gonna really appreciate it," said Ashley Quick, a Southern Miss student.
The Big Event is a student initiated service project allowing all members of the Southern Miss family from students, faculty, and staff to come together and show their appreciation for the university and the City of Hattiesburg by giving back to the surrounding community.
