HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Dozens of people gathered at Southern Miss this morning to help fight Cystic Fibrosis.
They took part in the annual "Great Strides Run 4 Breath 5k run/walk" at the Payne Center. The event is a fundraiser for the state chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The money raised from the event goes to fund medical research for finding a cure for the disease, along with supporting the C.F. accredited care center in Jackson.
"Our main goal is we always raise money for medical research, to help fund the cure for this disease," said Renda McGowan, Executive Director of the Foundation for Mississippi. "Two years ago we found a new drug called Kalydeco, that does actually correct the defect, and from there, the map has been made and so we are moving quickly and fast to find other drugs that hopefully in the really near future will cure this disease once and for all," said McGowan.
The foundation will do nine 5k run/walks across the state this year, as well as a tennis tournament, golf tournament and various other events to raise money.
