Book reports come to life at Southern Regional Reading Fair

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Over 450 students gathered Thursday at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg for the Southern Regional Reading Fair.

The students dressed like characters in their favorite books and presented their poster boards and book reports to the judges. The participants have already won the school and district level competitions and those that win the regional competition will advance to the state level.

"The purpose of the reading fair is really to encourage reading and for children to display their favorite books and encourage other people to read them," said Mary Walters, coordinator of the Regional Reading Fair. "And just to celebrate reading."

The fair has been going on for years now and was initiated by the Mississippi Department of Education. 41 entities were represented at the fair on Thursday, the majority of which were school districts.

The event's overwhelming participation serves as a testament to the region's love for reading.
