Mayor makes proclamation for Health Empowerment Week

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Earlier this year, The City of Hattiesburg received a $27,000 planning grant from the national league of cities to connect health insurance to children.

Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree announced on Tuesday the week of March 17th will be Health Empowerment Week.

The Department of Social Work at the University of Southern Mississippi is working with the mayor to help children in our community receive healthcare.

City leaders will be in the Hawkins Rowan, and Lillie Burney neighborhoods to keep the community up to date about healthcare.

"We'll be knocking on doors, trying to do a survey to make sure that those who don't have insurance, the youth who don't have insurance, that we can make them aware of insurance availability in our area,"  said DuPree.

The mayor also said to remind the community that March 31st is the last day to sign up for the Affordable Care Act.
