Mississippi students compete in archery tournament

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Students from across the Pine Belt were shooting for the bulls eye Tuesday morning in the South State Tournament for Archery at the Forrest County Multi Purpose Center.

"Archery is the fastest growing sport nation wide, including Mississippi.," said Lacey Kuhn, MDWFP Marketing Coordinator. "We have over forty thousand kids participating in the program now."

The program is designed to introduce students in fourth through 12th grade to the sport during their physical education class or as a team sport.

"I would recommend it to other people because it gets you involved your school and its really fun to compete against other schools," said Joseph Lott, a Seminary High School contestant.

Over 3,000 student archers representing over 200 schools tried their hand at taking the best shot as they competed in North and South region tournaments. The program promoted international style target archery as part of in-school curriculum to improve educational performance and participation in shooting sports.

"It's really become sort of a phenomenon, and I think what's unique about it is that you don't have to be the fastest or the strongest athlete to participate in the program," said Kuhn. "So it kinda opens the doors and allows more students to get involved in team sports in school."

Students will advance to the state tournament in Jackson in April.

Though soft-spoken, Steven Anderson hits hard. A "violent" runner as Southern Miss teammate Keon Howard describes him, perhaps Anderson is making up for all those years spent at quarterback. "Steven runs like he doesn't want to be hit no more,” Howard said.
