HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Mississippi's First Lady traveled to Forrest County Tuesday to read to some young school
Children as part of her "Read Across Mississippi" tour.
Deborah Bryant read to third graders and kindergarten students at Earl Travillion Attendance Center.
She read "The Fib: A Wordy Tale" by Mississippi author and illustrator Bill Wilson.
In January, Bryant began her tour with the goal of increasing awareness of the importance of reading.
"Reading just affects everything we do and I want every child to be successful," Bryant said. "In order for them to be successful, they have to learn to read, because by third grade, if you don't learn to read, you can't read to learn when you get to the fourth grade," she said.
"(The First Lady's visit) was very exciting," said Michael Hubbard, a 3rd grader at the school. "I had fun reading and I like the pictures," he said.
"It was really fun," said Toni Poston, another 3rd grader at the school. "I learned all the words she read from the book," she said.
