SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield Police Officer Juan Taveras is now in serious condition following a one-car accident on Maple Street Monday night.

Taveras suffered from head trauma, broken arms, legs, ribs and facial bones, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney. He has undergone a series of operations working towards his recovery, Delaney said.

"He is strong, but he is coming out of the woods," Delaney said.

Taveras was brought to Baystate Medical Center and was in critical condition since Monday evening.

First responders found off-duty Officer Juan Taveras, 26, who has been with the department since 2010, at about 9:50 p.m. Monday. His car had crashed into a tree, Delaney said.

Officers on scene performed first aid and EMTs arrived and transported him to the hospital.

Taveras was traveling from the area of State Street when he struck the median near 50 Maple St., Delaney said. The accident is under investigation, but speed might have been a factor, he said.

The car spun out of control and crossed lanes to the east side of Maple Street. It then struck a tree near 83 Maple St., Delaney said.

"I ask the citizens of Springfield to keep Officer Taveras in their thoughts and prayers so that he makes a full recovery," Delaney said. "He is a good police officer and well-liked in the department."

Theaccident is still under investigation.
